Uniform rectangular fill estimate. Density depends on stone size, moisture and compaction; confirm the supplier’s density and ordering units.

How this was calculated

Convert length, width and thickness to meters.

Volume = length × width × depth × (1 + allowance/100).

Mass = volume × supplier bulk density.

Formula and method

Volume in m³ = length × width × depth × allowance factor. Metric tonnes = volume × density in kg/m³ ÷ 1,000.

Worked example

A 5 m × 4 m area at 5 cm depth, with 10% extra, needs 1.1 m³. At 1,600 kg/m³ this is 1.76 metric tonnes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the density the same for every gravel?

No. Gradation, moisture and compaction change bulk density. Use supplier information and distinguish metric tonnes from US short tons.
