A range, not a target. These formulas were built for drug dosing, not health, and use only height and sex. A muscular person can sit well above all four with low body fat and excellent health markers. The BMI range is the more useful guide; body fat percentage is better still.

Where these formulas came from

The ideal body weight formulas were not designed as health targets. The Devine formula, published in 1974, was created to standardize medication dosing — particularly for drugs where dose depends on lean mass rather than total weight. The Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi variants are refinements from a similar clinical tradition.

All four share a structure: a base weight at five feet of height, plus a fixed increment for each additional inch. That simplicity is exactly why they remain useful for dosing and limited as personal goals — they encode nothing about frame size, muscle mass, age, or body composition.

Why a range beats a single number

The healthy BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9 spans a surprisingly wide band of weights. At 5 feet 10 inches, it runs from roughly 129 to 174 pounds — a 45-pound span, all of it consistent with a healthy BMI. Where you fall within it depends on your build and how much muscle you carry.

Muscle mass matters most in interpreting the result. A well-trained person can weigh substantially more than every formula suggests while carrying low body fat and being in excellent health. If your weight exceeds the formulas but your body fat percentage and blood work are good, the formulas are the thing that is wrong.

Adjusting for frame size

The Hamwi method is the only one of the four that formally accounts for build: subtract 10% for a small frame or add 10% for a large one. Frame is judged from wrist circumference relative to height, using the bands below. The calculator applies the adjustment to the Hamwi figure when you select a small or large frame; the other formulas have no such provision and are shown unadjusted.

Better questions to ask

Rather than targeting a specific weight, most people get more from asking whether their waist circumference is in a healthy range, whether their body fat percentage is reasonable for their sex and age, whether their blood pressure and blood work look good, and whether they are physically capable of what they want to do.

There is also good evidence that health behaviours improve outcomes largely independently of weight change. Regular activity, adequate sleep, and better diet quality reduce cardiovascular and metabolic risk whether or not the scale moves — which makes them a more reliable target than a number derived from a dosing formula.

There is a healthy range rather than a single correct weight. The BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9 spans about 40 to 50 pounds for a typical adult height. The calculator above shows both that range and the four classic formulas; where you should sit within it depends on your frame and muscle mass.

Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?

None is authoritative, because they were built for medication dosing rather than health assessment. Robinson and Miller tend to give slightly lower figures than Devine and Hamwi. The healthy BMI range is generally more useful for personal goals, and body composition is more informative still.

How do I know my frame size?

Measure your wrist just below the bone at its narrowest point, then compare it with the bands in the frame-size table for your height and sex. A quicker check: wrap your thumb and middle finger around the opposite wrist — overlapping suggests a small frame, just touching medium, not meeting large.

Do these formulas account for muscle mass?

No, and that is their main limitation. They use only height and sex. A muscular person can weigh well above every formula's output while having low body fat and excellent health markers. If you train seriously, use body fat percentage instead.

Does ideal weight change with age?

The formulas do not account for age, but body composition does change. Muscle mass tends to decline while fat increases, so an unchanged weight can conceal a meaningful shift in composition. Some research suggests a slightly higher BMI is not harmful in older adults, where maintaining muscle and strength matters more than hitting a specific weight.

Why do the formulas give different answers?

Each was fitted to a different population for a different purpose, and each pairs a different base weight with a different increment per inch. Miller's flat slope and high base favour shorter people; Hamwi's steep slope favours taller ones. The spread between them at your height — often 10 pounds or more — is a fair measure of how loosely any single ideal weight is defined.
