Rough mid-parental adult height estimate

178.9 cm

  • Broad illustrative range (±4 inches)168.7–189.0 cm

A rough family-height estimate with substantial individual variation. It does not use a child’s age, growth pattern, puberty timing or bone age and cannot diagnose growth problems. A pediatrician’s growth-chart review is more informative.

How this was calculated

Average the two parents’ heights.

Add 2½ inches (6.35 cm) for the boy formula, or subtract it for the girl formula.

Formula and method

Average the parents’ adult heights. Add 2½ inches for the boy formula or subtract 2½ inches for the girl formula. The same adjustment is exactly 6.35 cm.

Worked example

With parents 65 and 71 inches tall, the average is 68 inches. The boy-formula estimate is 70.5 inches, with broad individual variation.

Frequently asked questions

Can this assess whether a child is growing normally?

No. It does not use the child’s age, growth velocity or puberty timing. A pediatric growth-chart review provides information this family-height estimate cannot.
