Converted value

MMXXVI

    How this was calculated

    Symbols: I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000.

    Subtractive pairs are IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM. Zero and negative numbers are not represented in this convention.

    Method

    Roman notation combines I, V, X, L, C, D and M. A smaller symbol before a larger one subtracts only in standard pairs IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM.

    Worked example

    2026 = 2000 + 20 + 6 = MM + XX + VI = MMXXVI. XIV is 14 because X + IV = 10 + 4.

    Assumptions and limits

    This tool uses standard subtractive notation for 1–3,999. It rejects nonstandard forms such as IIX and XIIII. Historical inscriptions may use additive notation or overlines that this converter does not support.
