  • Baserunners (walks + hits)7.0000
  • Innings as a decimal6.6667
  • Baserunners per 9 innings9.45

Standard WHIP counts walks and hits only; hit batters and batters who reach on errors are not included. Shown to two decimals.

How this was calculated

  1. Innings = whole innings + outs ÷ 3Substitute: 6.2 → 6 ⅔ = 6.666666667Result: 6.666666667 innings
  2. WHIP = (walks + hits) ÷ inningsSubstitute: (2 + 5) ÷ 6.666666667Result: 1.05

WHIP formula

WHIP = (walks + hits) ÷ innings pitched. It measures how many batters reach base by a walk or hit per inning, so lower is better.

Innings pitched use box-score notation: each out is a third of an inning, so 6.1 means 6⅓ innings and 6.2 means 6⅔. The calculator converts these before dividing.

Worked example

A pitcher allows 2 walks and 5 hits in 6.2 innings. Innings = 6 + 2 ÷ 3 = 6.667. WHIP = (2 + 5) ÷ 6.667 = 1.05.

Over a season, 50 walks and 150 hits in 180.1 innings gives 200 ÷ 180.333 = 1.11.

What WHIP leaves out

Standard WHIP counts only walks and hits. Batters hit by a pitch, reaching on an error or on a fielder's choice are not included, and WHIP says nothing about extra-base hits or runs.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good WHIP?

In Major League Baseball a WHIP near 1.00 is elite, and about 1.30 is close to league average in recent seasons.

Are hit batters included in WHIP?

No. The standard statistic counts only walks (bases on balls) and hits.

Why not just divide by 6.2?

Because .2 means two outs, or two-thirds of an inning. Dividing by 6.2 instead of 6.667 overstates WHIP.
