Compare a measurement with an accepted reference and see absolute error, signed error and percentage error.

Absolute percent error

  • Signed error-2.0000
  • Absolute error2.0000
  • Signed relative error-2.00%

Reference-based error is different from symmetric percentage difference. Both inputs must use the same units.

How this was calculated

Absolute error = |measured − reference|.

Absolute percent error = absolute error ÷ |reference| × 100.

Formula and method

Percent error = |measurement − reference| / |reference| × 100. A zero reference has no defined relative error. Both quantities must use the same unit.

Worked example

A measurement of 98 against a reference of 100 has absolute error 2, signed error −2 and percent error 2%.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from percentage difference?

Percent error uses a designated reference. Symmetric percentage difference compares two values without treating either as the accepted reference.
