2026 steady-pay estimate, not Form W-4 withholding or a payroll service. Assumes one wage earner, basic standard deduction, under 65/not blind, no dependents, credits, other income, pre-tax health benefits or deductions. Enter permitted retirement deferrals. Additional Medicare is annual filing liability; employer withholding can differ.

How this was calculated

Annual net = wages − traditional retirement deferrals − estimated federal income tax − employee payroll taxes − entered allowances.

Divide annual net by the chosen number of pay periods. Traditional 401(k) deferrals reduce modeled income tax but not Social Security or Medicare wages.

Formula and method

Annual estimated net pay equals wages minus traditional retirement deferrals, federal income tax, employee Social Security, Medicare and the entered allowances. Divide by pay periods. Traditional 401(k) deferrals reduce modeled income tax, but not Social Security and Medicare wages.

Worked example

At $200,000 annual employee wages, 2026 Social Security tax is capped at $184,500 × 6.2% = $11,439. Medicare at 1.45% is $2,900. A single filer reaches, but does not exceed, the $200,000 Additional Medicare threshold.

Frequently asked questions

Will this match the withholding on my pay stub?

Not necessarily. Form W-4 elections, irregular bonuses, multiple jobs, spouse income, pre-tax benefits and employer payroll rules can change withholding. This estimates annual liability for one steady wage earner and a basic standard deduction; it is not a withholding instruction.
