How Alt codes work
Hold down Alt, type the code on the numeric keypad (not the number row, and with Num Lock on), then release Alt. In Microsoft Office you can also type a Unicode hex code and press Alt+X, for example 00A9 then Alt+X for ©.
A code with a leading zero, Alt+0nnn, uses the Windows ANSI code page, which is Windows-1252 on Western-language systems. A code without a leading zero, Alt+nnn, uses the OEM code page, which is code page 437 on US-English systems. So Alt+0233 and Alt+130 both give é, while Alt+0169 gives © and code page 437 has no copyright sign at all. Systems set to other languages use other code pages and can give different results.

Alt+0128 to Alt+0255 (Windows-1252)
These are the most portable Alt codes because Windows-1252 is the standard Western code page. From 0160 to 0255 the codes match Unicode U+00A0 to U+00FF; 0128 to 0159 hold extra symbols such as € and ™. Codes 0129, 0141, 0143, 0144 and 0157 are undefined and omitted.

On IBM-compatible PCs, the byte values 1 to 31 and 127 display as small graphic symbols rather than control codes. Typing them as Alt codes gives the matching Unicode characters, including the card suits: Alt+3 ♥, Alt+4 ♦, Alt+5 ♣, Alt+6 ♠.
