How this was calculated

Move the decimal point until the coefficient’s magnitude is at least 1 and less than 10, except for zero.

The exponent counts that decimal movement, including any exponent already entered.

Formula and method

Scientific notation moves the decimal so the nonzero coefficient has magnitude from 1 up to, but excluding, 10. The exponent records the movement.

Worked example

0.004560 becomes 4.560 × 10^−3. The written trailing zero is retained.
